Keeping Web Apps Human

At White Ops, our core mission is to protect the integrity of the internet by verifying the humanity of every online interaction. We’re getting there - we observe a trillion interactions every week (and soon, a trillion per day). To make the internet more human, we disrupt the economics of cybercrime by making it a lot harder for cybercriminals to do what they do. By making these attacks more costly and difficult for attackers, we can have a lasting impact in the fight against fraud by making it too expensive for them to bother, knowing we’re out there looking for them.

Until today, we’ve focused predominantly on advertising and marketing fraud as these continue to be multi-billion dollar industries for fraudsters. The profits from these criminal activities often fund other types of cybercrime, such as malware and exploit development, malware-as-a-service, and more.

While our battle against advertising and marketing fraud continues, we’ve made considerable gains in protecting against this kind of criminal activity. White Ops has been pulled in by enterprises to help protect against a wide variety of fraud and abuse because of our track record in defeating ad fraud botnets.

Today, we announced White Ops Application Integrity, which aims to protect enterprises against account takeover, automated account creation, and web scraping.

Protecting Websites and Applications from Fraud and Abuse

Many enterprises struggle to answer a critical question: how do we distinguish real users from fraudulent imposters?

Being able to answer this question is critical to protecting against account takeover attacks and automated account creation. Companies struggling to solve this problem face real consequences. Forrester estimates that nearly $7 billion is lost each year due to account takeover attacks.

Application Integrity, built on the White Ops Bot Mitigation Platform, uses multilayered detection to protect enterprise websites and applications from sophisticated account takeover and scraper bots. Application Integrity helps protect some of the largest e-commerce, social media, and classifieds platforms that are constantly targeted by criminals.

How Application Integrity Works

White Ops Application Integrity, at its core, identifies whether traffic to protected web applications (and in particular their login mechanisms) are human or not. White Ops Application Integrity can operate in passive detection mode, and also in active prevention mode to enforce policies that stop or deceive bot traffic.

We start by collecting signals with our detection tags. White Ops detection tags are deployed within minutes via JavaScript or Software Development Kits (SDKs) for mobile applications. Beyond what’s collected automatically, clients can bring their own signals to enrich our detections and spot instances of intentional tag evasion.

Finally, unlike other solutions, the White Ops Dashboard and API provides full insight into each detection. For all bot and nonstandard detection events, we provide the specific threat category and factors observed, as well as where it was observed.

Why Application Integrity is Different

Leading research and analysis firm ESG recently examined the application security landscape and provided insight into why many traditional tools struggle to detect sophisticated bots.
