ChatGPT Agent is OpenAI’s agentic AI system that can reason, plan, and execute complex goals with minimal human oversight. The agent acts in a virtual browser/computer to complete multi‑step workflows online. It can navigate websites, fill forms, edit spreadsheets, and use read‑only connectors (e.g., mail or docs) when enabled, and will pause for confirmations and hand control back to the user when needed. A preview version of ChatGPT Agent was known as Operator, but that agent has been retired following its integration into Agent Mode.

Each request includes HTTP Message Signatures compliant with RFC 9421, carrying a Signature-Agent field set to “https://chatgpt.com” and the corresponding Signature and Signature-Input headers.

Validating these against OpenAI’s public key directory at https://chatgpt.com/.well-known/http-message-signatures-directory confirms the request originates from an authorized OpenAI agent instance.

Even verified agents can be misused, configured incorrectly, or redirected by a malicious prompt.
